Life can take unexpected turns, and sometimes those turns lead us to places that change everything or even save your life. For me, that place was Shades of Hope Center of Healing in Buffalo Gap, TX in 2009. This center is where a spark was fully ignited that led to a profound transformation in my life.
In this post, I want to share more on how Shades of Hope played a crucial role in my journey toward healing and renewal.
Before sharing, I want to acknowledge that my journey to arriving at Shades of Hope was difficult. I almost did not make it but am so thankful for the support of my family, and most importantly that inner desire buried deep within to not give up even when my mind told me there was no hope. I also need to give a huge shout out to Ashley Judd (I name drop her a lot!) for publicly sharing her experience at Shades of Hope because that drove me to seek care there as a last-ditch attempt to save my life.
Finding the Right Support When It Felt Impossible
Before discovering Shades of Hope, I felt trapped in a cycle of despair. The challenges I faced seemed overwhelming, and I struggled to find a way out. Many treatment options felt impersonal or ineffective, leaving me skeptical about recovery. When I first heard about Shades of Hope, I was hesitant because I had already gone to another inpatient treatment center previously and held little hope that there was an inpatient treatment center that had staff that truly understood eating disorders. Wow, was I proven wrong. Not only did Shades of Hope understand eating disorders, but they understood all addictions, even addictions that I did not know of!
What stood out immediately was their "no bull shit" approach. I had so many excuses and they very quickly were able to shoot those down.
I remember being there for less than 24-28 hours, and I was determined to leave thinking that I had made a mistake, and this was not the place for me to be. I was taken to Tennie's office when I demanded to leave. She is the founder of Shades of Hope and a force to be reckoned with (in a good way!) I can close my eyes right now and hear the sound of her voice. She asked me what I thought I was going to do if I left. I went on and on about how I had realized I could do this on my own, and I wasn't as sick as I thought I was. I was going to go home and stick with therapy, ask for help when I needed it, and resolve this eating disorder on my own. I was in so much denial. Tennie asked me where I was going to live if I left, and I said with my brother of course. He is understanding and supportive. He will accept me into his home. Tennie called up my brother, and we spoke to him together. She asked him what he thought about me leaving treatment and could I come stay with him, and he said no. I was dumbfounded. My own brother who had undergone his own addiction issues, who I thought would understand me the most of any of my family, was putting his foot down. He said I could leave but I would have to find another place to live because he could no longer continue to be in my life unless I got the help I so badly needed. Tough love at its finest moment! He was instrumental in me staying in treatment. I decided right then that I was going to stay. I was going to be brave.
Before my transformation occurred though, I laid on Tennie's office floor and had a breakdown. Hysterical and crying for several minutes as I realized my lack of control over the situation. Tennie had the biggest smile on her face when I finally looked up. She was thrilled for me that I had broken down. It was my first step towards admitting powerlessness. In my moment of despair, she saw the potential for change and healing, and she was right. I did not stay stuck within the disease for long.
Shades of Hope treats all addictions. This was major because a lot of treatment facilities allow other addictions while treating you for your "main" addiction. Example: a lot of eating disorder treatment centers or drug and alcohol treatment centers allow cigarette smoking. In order to break the cycle of addiction, one must be treated for all addictions. I know this to be true from my experience at Shades of Hope.
For the first time since the eating disorder started, I felt seen and heard. I felt valued. I felt like I was worth it.
A Safe Space to Rediscover Hope and Purpose
Perhaps the most profound impact of Shades of Hope was restoring my sense of hope. When I arrived, I felt lost and uncertain about the future. The center created a safe space where I could explore my feelings without judgment and begin to imagine a better life.
Through therapy and reflection, I rediscovered my strengths and passions. I started setting goals that aligned with my values and dreams. This renewed sense of purpose has been a driving force in my ongoing transformation.
Shades of Hope did not just save my life; it helped me build a life worth living.
When I struggle in life (because we all do at some point more than once!), I remind myself of all I have overcome. Recovery from addiction does not mean your life is going to be perfect. For me, it means that I am stronger than I ever imagined, a survivor of trauma, and that I can overcome.
Recovery is a deeply personal journey, and finding the right support can make all the difference. Shades of Hope Treatment Center was the catalyst that changed my path from despair to hope.
If you or someone you know is struggling, reaching out for help is the first step. Centers like Shades of Hope offer more than treatment—they offer a chance to reclaim your life and move forward with strength and hope.
I truly hope if you are reading this and searching for help, that you find the right treatment that works for you. I sincerely hope you never give up.
